That's the title of an article in December's Christianity Today magazine. According to the article, two years ago, Facing the Giants, a low-budget sports movie made by volunteers at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, grossed $10 million on a budget of only $100,000. This year, Sherwood scored an even bigger hit with Fireproof. This marriage-in-crisis movie made for $500,000, has currently taken in $28,327,659 according to BoxOfficeMojo.com
The film was also promoted on the Dr. Phil show, which devoted an episode to the theme of "fireproofing your marriage." Fireproof's success goes beyond the film itself: The Love Dare, a book tie-in co written by director Alex Kendrick and his producer, brother Stephen (both pastors at Sherwood), sold 600,000 copies within weeks, reaching No. 1 on The New York Times list of best-selling paperback advice books.
I'm excited to announce that we will be showing this Christ-centered film at Faith on consecutive Friday's, January 9 and 16 in the Family Life Center. We're calling it, FIREPROOF DATE NITE at Faith. Our goal is to have as many people as possible view the film before we kick-off a six week sermon series titled, Fireproof Your Marriage, beginning the weekend of January 17. The series will end the weekend of February 22 right before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent on February 25. We believe the movie and the sermon series will be huge blessing to all whether married or single because it's all about relationships.
